If they can’t be my words…follow these!
Is not what you hear people ask when they learn you are going abroad! It is always are you excited? Well people fail to relate a little or at least they did to me! But know one thing…
I’m jealous! You might be nervous! How are you going to fit your life in that suitcase…and get to a foreign country and navigate your way to your school or your host family’s house…do they speak your language? Will you be able to understand the accent?
What happens if you want to go home? What happens when you see your friends on facebook and you’re not having fun at the exact moment you see those pictures?
Chances are neither are they! There are little things to know about going abroad that people usually don’t talk about! People always ask if you are so excited…I was not! I was scared! I couldn’t do it! London sounded great when I was planning it…but leaving for sixth months and not seeing the people I love…nope, I can’t do it!
This is normal! What is not normal is to have your flight delayed because of a freak blizzard and nearly miss your entire orientation…not knowing you actually had missed the school’s orientation entirely…and when you showed up the office would be closed.
Oh, this all happened to me! But I promise you this…I had the time of my life and I’d go back in a heartbeat! I made a couple mistakes…over tipping or being cheap when I shouldn’t have been (just becareful)! You’ll be fine and have an amazing time! Everyone always does! The nerves are normal…my words won’t make them go away! You’ll make friends! You’ll miss the ones you left (but I promise you, people that go abroad have amnesia!! we forget about the pains that come with school normally…if you aren’t having fun at one moment, I promise you are still having more fun then you would be at school…and you’ll realize this. Just not now!)!
